President Mahama extends IGP Yohuno’s tenure by two years following re-engagement

President John Dramani Mahama has granted a two-year contract extension to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, allowing him to remain in office beyond his statutory retirement in December 2025. The approval, communicated in a letter dated Tuesday, November 25, 2025, and signed by Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, follows a recommendation from the Police Council.

The extension, effective from December 28, 2025, enables IGP Yohuno to continue heading the Ghana Police Service and fulfilling all responsibilities of his position. According to the Presidency, the decision is based on the Council’s conviction that Yohuno’s ongoing leadership is essential as the police service implements significant reforms.

“The President’s decision reflects the Council’s firm conviction that your continued leadership is essential to sustaining ongoing reforms, strengthening operational effectiveness, and ensuring stability within the Ghana Police Service at this critical period,” the statement noted.

The IGP has been asked to formally confirm acceptance of the extension within three days of receiving the letter. Copies of the communication were also sent to the Vice President, Chief of Staff, and the Minister for the Interior.
