Minister for Communications, Sam George, has announced that 58 out of 64 radio stations, which were previously shut down for regulatory breaches, have contacted the National Communications Authority (NCA) to begin the process of regularising their operations. The minister noted that while 210 stations were found to be in violation of NCA regulations, only 64 were initially shut down, and 6 of the affected stations have not yet approached the authority to correct their issues.
“Of the 64 radio stations, 58 have written to the NCA and initiated the process of regularising their paperwork,” he stated during the government’s Accountability Series on Friday, August 1. After the shutdown of these stations, President John Mahama intervened and requested that an amnesty be granted to allow the defaulters an opportunity to rectify their situations. Following the president’s intervention, the Ministry granted a three-month amnesty.
However, the minister issued a stern warning to the remaining stations that have not taken action, cautioning that any further violations will lead to severe sanctions without mercy or prior notice. “We expect that the public sensitisation with the first batch of the 68 would have compelled others to take steps to rectify their anomaly,”
“For all those who have failed to take any step, there will be no public announcement on it; simply, there will be an enforcement in order to protect the public resource.”
