Minister of State for Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has addressed concerns raised by suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo regarding threats she claims are intended to force her resignation. This statement follows Justice Torkornoo’s first media address since her suspension, where she revealed that she has received threats aimed at pressuring her to step down amid an ongoing inquiry into petitions seeking her removal.
During a press briefing on Wednesday, June 25, the Government Spokesperson minimised the significance of Torkornoo’s public concerns, stating that as the Chief Justice, she should be aware of the proper institutions to report such threats. “The Chief Justice, more than anyone else in this country, should know where to go to address such threats. If someone sends you a threat today, you know where to seek redress, and that is my response to the situation,” he said.
Justice Torkornoo was suspended on April 22, 2025, following a prima facie determination by President John Dramani Mahama in consultation with the Council of State. Her suspension is part of the constitutional proceedings outlined in Article 146(10), which describes the process for the potential removal of a Chief Justice.
