2026 BECE begins today; 620,000 candidates to sit exams

A total of 620,141 candidates across Ghana have begun the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) today, Monday, May 4. This year, the examinations are taking place under heightened supervision to combat examination malpractice. The exams, conducted nationwide by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), will run from May 4 to May 11 and include candidates from 20,395 participating schools throughout the country.

WAEC has reinforced its zero-tolerance policy on cheating and has warned that any candidates caught violating examination rules will face strict penalties. They have also emphasised that banned items, especially mobile phones, are not allowed in examination centers.

The Council further cautioned candidates to maintain discipline throughout the period, noting that any form of aggression or interference with invigilators and supervisors will not be tolerated.

On the part of the Ghana Education Service, Director-General Professor Ernest Kofi Davis disclosed that individuals previously linked to examination malpractice have been sidelined from this year’s process. According to him, all supervisors and invigilators under investigation over their alleged involvement in last year’s BECE have been disqualified from participating.
