In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, maintaining relevance in the media industry demands adaptability, innovation, and a strong understanding of emerging trends. Ghanaian media mogul Nathan Kwabena Adisi, known as Bola Ray, embodies these principles. In the premiere episode of Spotlight Spin, hosted by Etornam Kumashie, Bola Ray shared his insights on topics such as reinvention, longevity, and finding the balance between authenticity and change in the modern media environment.
Reflecting on his 25-year journey, the celebrated broadcaster and entrepreneur emphasized the significant impact of technological advancements on the industry. “I started off in an era when people were still using vinyl and cassettes,” he recalled. “However, because some did not adapt to the changes, they have gone under.” His statement highlights a challenging reality: those who fail to evolve risk being left behind. The landscape has shifted dramatically, from traditional radio and television to the rise of digital streaming and social media, changing the way audiences consume content. Bola Ray’s success can be attributed to his ability to adapt while maintaining his unique voice. “It is important, and indeed imperative, to upgrade, reset, and keep up with the times,” he emphasized.
Embracing change is essential, but Bola Ray emphasized the importance of staying true to one’s identity. For media personalities and content creators, balancing originality with current trends can be challenging. He advised, “You don’t just have to say, ‘I’m old school, so I won’t change.’ Learn what young people are involved in. They keep up with the trends and help energize you.” Bola Ray also shared how learning from younger generations, including his own children, has helped him remain relevant. By immersing himself in evolving media spaces, he has successfully navigated different phases of his career without losing his authenticity.
However, the digital age comes with its challenges, including misinformation. Bola Ray recounted a personal experience where false reports claimed he had been arrested. “I was in New Jersey on vacation, and suddenly, I saw messages saying I had been arrested for something I didn’t even know about,” he said. The incident highlighted the double-edged nature of modern media—while it offers vast opportunities for visibility, it also demands vigilance against false narratives.
To young media professionals, Bola Ray’s advice is simple: be bold, adaptable, and always willing to learn. “Many young people are timid because of cultural constraints, but you need to have a voice. Be assertive, but always be respectful,” he encouraged.
