The government has announced plans to commission an independent investigation into allegations of overbilling and faulty electricity meters in parts of the Volta Region. The inquiry will be led by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Energy Commission, following widespread complaints from residents about inaccurate bills and defective meters.
Speaking at the launch of the Turnkey Electrification Project in Ho on Friday, August 28, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, stressed that while consumers are obliged to pay their bills, charges must be fair and accurate.
“I am not saying you should not pay your bills; you must pay your bills. But we want you to pay the right bills. We will send a team from the PURC, not ECG, because the complaint is against ECG, and we cannot ask ECG to investigate itself. We need an independent body,” he explained.
The investigation will examine claims of faulty meters and billing irregularities, with corrective measures to follow where issues are confirmed. Dr. Jinapor assured residents that defective meters would be replaced, and customers who have overpaid would receive credits to recover excess payments over time. He urged the public to cooperate with the process and accept its findings, emphasising that the exercise is intended to strengthen transparency, fairness, and accountability in the electricity sector.
