Suspect arrested in connection with the assault of JoyNews’ journalist during Wontumi’s protest

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the assault reported by JoyNews journalist Latif Iddrisu. A statement released by the police on June 8, 2025, indicated that Theophilus Thompson, a 55-year-old resident of James Town, was arrested on June 7, 2025, at around 5:00 p.m. in relation to the assault. The suspect is currently in custody and is cooperating with the investigation.

The police are also making efforts to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the incident. As previously reported, on May 27, 2025, at approximately 7:00 p.m., a group of individuals, including some members of parliament and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), staged a demonstration in front of the EOCO Office in Accra to protest the arrest of Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, also known as Chairman Wontumi.

During the protest, Latif Iddrisu, who was covering the event for JoyNews, was confronted and assaulted by some demonstrators. The police subsequently launched investigations into the assault, leading to the arrest of the suspect. The Accra Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights of journalists and ensuring that anyone who engages in acts of violence against media personnel or any member of the public is brought to justice.
