Students who attack teachers will face the law – Education Ministry warns

The Ministry of Education has issued a firm directive warning students against attacking teachers in schools nationwide. This follows recent incidents of assaults on teachers in several Senior High Schools. In a statement dated Thursday, February 19, 2026, the Ministry stressed that any individual—including students—who assaults teachers carrying out their lawful duties will face the full force of the law.

“The Ministry is deeply concerned about the rising cases of violence against teachers in schools across the country,” the statement read. “We strongly condemn these acts and are committed to ending them. Offenders will face severe legal consequences under Ghanaian law.” Recent cases cited by the Ministry include an assault at Kade Senior High Technical School, where all involved were arrested, arraigned before the Kade District Court, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and assault, and were subsequently convicted and fined.

The Ministry also condemned misconduct during the Super Zonal Sports Competition in the Eastern Region, which reportedly involved stabbing and an alleged sexual assault. The perpetrators have been arrested and are assisting police investigations, while victims are receiving medical and psycho-social support.

At West Africa Senior High School, two students and an accomplice have been arraigned before the Adenta Circuit Court for assaulting a teacher. They have been remanded in police custody for six weeks while the case proceeds. Speaking at the 54th Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), President John Dramani Mahama recalled a recent attack on a teacher during examinations and reaffirmed that such acts will not be tolerated.

He underscored the government’s commitment to safeguarding educators and ensuring offenders are held accountable.
The Ministry of Education echoed the President’s stance, stressing its full alignment with his position. It pledged continued collaboration with law enforcement and the judiciary to secure justice and prevent further incidents of violence against teachers.
