Recent research presented at the European Society of Cardiology offers promising news for late risers. The study, which analysed data from nearly 91,000 participants in the UK Biobank over a 14-year period, suggests that sleeping longer on weekends may help reduce the risk of heart attacks.
Those who compensated for lost sleep during the week by sleeping more on weekends experienced up to a 20% decrease in their risk of heart attacks. These findings provide hope for people with busy weekday schedules.
While maintaining consistent sleep patterns is ideal, researchers indicate that making up for lost rest on weekends can still have benefits for heart health. However, experts emphasise that prioritising regular and sufficient sleep throughout the week is essential for long-term well-being.
