REGSEC begins 3-day demolition exercise at Sakumo Ramsar Site today

A joint demolition exercise led by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Tema West Municipal Assembly will begin today, Tuesday, May 5. This operation targets unauthorised structures in the Golf Course section of the Sakumo Ramsar Site.

The three-day initiative aims to restore the natural flow of waterways in the area and mitigate the ongoing risk of flooding, especially with the rainy season approaching. Officials have stated that illegal buildings on critical waterways have significantly obstructed drainage channels, worsening flooding in surrounding communities.

They emphasise that this exercise is not a sudden action but rather a continuation of ongoing enforcement efforts that have been implemented over the years to protect the ecologically sensitive Ramsar site. Despite repeated warnings, notices, and earlier demolitions, encroachment on the land has continued, prompting the need for a more decisive and coordinated response.

The Sakumo Ramsar Site, which is internationally recognised for its ecological importance, has long been under threat from human activities, particularly unregulated construction. Authorities expressed concern that the increasing disregard for planning regulations not only endangers the environment but also puts lives and property at risk due to flooding.

Security personnel are expected to be on the ground to maintain order throughout the demolition exercise, while affected property owners are being urged to cooperate with officials to avoid confrontations.
