Russia has increased the number of full scholarships available to Ghanaian students from 120 to 240 each academic year. This announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, during his three-day official visit to Russia, which took place at the invitation of his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov. Both countries are seeking to deepen their bilateral cooperation.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Minister Ablakwa stated that the scholarships would prioritise strategic fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), engineering, petroleum sciences, and pharmaceuticals. He emphasised that these full scholarships would focus on courses deemed critical to Ghana’s development, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and other specialised areas.
The increase in scholarships is anticipated to provide more Ghanaian students with the opportunity to pursue higher education and specialised training in Russia. Additionally, this visit aims to strengthen cooperation between Ghana and Russia in various sectors, including energy and international affairs.
The two countries have agreed to advance cooperation in Ghana’s peaceful nuclear energy programme and its green transition objectives as Ghana works to diversify its energy mix. Ghana is seeking to add 700 megawatts of nuclear power to its electricity generation mix as part of efforts to improve energy security and diversify its power sources.
Ghana and Russia will also work together on global issues including counterterrorism, climate change and reforms at the United Nations. The Minister’s three-day visit forms part of Ghana’s efforts to deepen bilateral relations with Russia and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
