Police arrest 10 for creating fake online food delivery platforms to defraud customers

The Ghana Police Service, through the Cybercrime Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), has apprehended ten individuals accused of operating fake online food delivery platforms to scam unsuspecting customers. The first six suspects—Wonder Sakpiti, Sedinam Amaglo, Godsway Dunyo, Angela Agblemekpe, Mathew Aheto, and Fafali Amoah—were taken into custody during a targeted operation in Sogakope on October 1, 2025.

This operation was the result of extensive intelligence gathering, which identified three males and three females believed to be involved in the fraudulent activity. Initial findings indicate that the group created counterfeit websites and social media accounts, posing as reputable food brands such as Papaye, Pizzaman, KFC, and Mawarko. Customers who placed orders on these fake platforms were instructed to make advance payments through mobile money, but never received the food they ordered.

Further investigations indicated that, in some cases, the suspects gained unauthorised access to victims’ mobile money wallets and bank accounts under the guise of assisting them with payments and subsequently withdrew funds. Digital devices believed to have been used in the fraudulent activities were retrieved and are undergoing forensic examination.

Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of the main suspect on October 12, 2025, along with three others from their hideout at Haatso in Accra. The newly arrested suspects are Elijah Sotama Etse, alias Pop Smoke (the syndicate leader), Elliot Sotama Atsu, Jethro Atsu, and Obed Selasi Agboli. Twelve mobile phones were retrieved from the suspects and are being preserved for forensic examination.

All ten suspects are currently in police custody and will be put before court today, Monday, October 13, 2025. The Ghana Police Service is urging members of the public who may have fallen victim to this fraudulent scheme to report to the nearest police station to assist with ongoing investigations.
