Ghana’s nursing and midwifery education system is set for a transformative upgrade, with nursing colleges soon authorised to award degree certificates and introduce specialised training programmes, according to Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. Speaking at the inauguration of Advisory Boards for Health Training Institutions, the Minister explained that the reforms aim to produce highly skilled professionals capable of meeting the nation’s expanding healthcare needs.
“More than forty health training colleges will soon begin offering degree programmes,” Hon. Akandoh announced, noting that new specialist courses will cover areas such as critical care, oncology, and emergency nursing to strengthen service delivery. To enhance teaching quality, the government will provide PhD scholarships for tutors, while students will continue to benefit from trainee allowances under the No-Fee-Stress policy.
Hon. Akandoh urged the newly formed Advisory Boards to provide strong leadership, uphold high standards, and ensure accountability to secure long-term improvements in Ghana’s healthcare system.
