Nigeria president begins first UK state visit in 37 years

King Charles is set to host Nigeria’s first state visit to the United Kingdom in 37 years, welcoming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu with a ceremonial reception at Windsor Castle. The two-day visit will begin with greetings from senior members of the Royal Family, including Queen Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales.

On Wednesday evening, the King and President Tinubu will deliver addresses at a state banquet attended by political leaders and prominent figures with ties to Nigeria. In respect of the President’s observance of Ramadan, the traditional luncheon with the King at Windsor will not take place. State visits serve as a cornerstone of international diplomacy, and this occasion is expected to reinforce UK–Nigeria relations, particularly in areas such as financial services and broader business cooperation.

“This state visit is about turning a historic relationship into a modern economic partnership – transforming trust into opportunity,” said Nigeria’s government spokesman, Mohammed Idris. “Nigeria’s economic reforms are unlocking the potential of Africa’s largest consumer market. The United Kingdom is a natural partner in what comes next.

“This visit marks the next step in deepening co-operation across trade, finance and defence,” said Idris. The Nigerian visitors, who arrived in the UK on Tuesday, will be given the ceremonial grandeur of a royal welcome on Wednesday, with a carriage procession and then a military parade on the manicured lawns inside Windsor Castle.

There will be exchanges of gifts and displays of items related to Nigeria that are kept in the Royal Collection, before an opulent state banquet in St George’s Hall.

President Tinubu and Mrs Tinubu will lay a wreath of flowers on the tomb of the late Queen Elizabeth II, in St George’s Chapel. They will also attend an interfaith event, designed to build bridges between religions. The president is a Muslim and as this is the month of fasting during Ramadan there won’t be the usual lunch hosted by the King for the visiting dignitaries.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, a Christian and ordained pastor, accompanies the President on this historic visit. Yet the occasion unfolds against a backdrop of religious tensions at home. In Nigeria’s Borno State this week, at least 23 people lost their lives and more than 100 were injured in a series of suspected suicide bombings attributed to Boko Haram militants. President Tinubu denounced the “evil-minded” groups responsible, while UK parliamentarians have urged stronger protections for freedom of worship in Nigeria.

The visit also takes place amid wider global challenges, including the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, where President Volodymyr Zelensky met King Charles on Tuesday. The state banquet will mark the King’s first public address since the arrest of his brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, adding further gravity to the occasion.
