NPP to stage ‘Yen suro ahunahuna’ demo over arrest of party officials

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to hold a demonstration in Sunyani on Wednesday, April 22, to protest what it describes as the unjust arrest of its officials. National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye disclosed this during an interview on Eyewitness News on Monday, April 20.

He explained that the protest, dubbed the “Yen Suro Ahunahuna Demo,” is being spearheaded by the party’s Sunyani East Constituency. According to him, the action is a response to what the party views as growing intimidation and restrictions on free expression. “The New Patriotic Party, through our Sunyani East Constituency, is organising a demonstration dubbed the ‘Yen Suro Ahunahuna Demo’ following a series of arrests we consider unwarranted. We are not intimidated by these actions or the attempt to criminalise free speech. We believe democracy is under attack,” he stated.

The protest comes on the back of the recent arrest of the Sunyani East Communications Officer of the party, Abubakar Yakubu, also known as Baba Amando. He was arrested over allegations of offensive conduct, false publication, and the circulation of statements deemed likely to incite fear and panic. Although he has since been granted bail to the tune of GH¢30,000 with two sureties, party officials maintain that the arrest raises serious concerns about the protection of free expression.
