The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) staff in the Upper East Region have staged a nationwide demonstration in solidarity with members of the Volta River Authority (VRA) over the proposed plan to merge Bui Power Authority with the VRA. The draft bill, currently under consideration in Parliament, also outlines a plan to merge the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) with NEDCo and to create a new entity called the Thermal Power Authority from VRA’s thermal facilities.
On September 18, 2024, staff from the VRA and members of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) gathered in protest at the VRA headquarters in Accra, voicing their opposition to the controversial merger proposal.
A spokesperson for the workers, Priscilla Anafo, stated that all attempts to merge Bui Power with NEDCo would be rejected in full force. “We’re aware a bill has been sent to Parliament in an attempt to merge Bui Power with VRA. We reject, and reject it completely,” she stated.
