The Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra is facing a serious threat from land encroachers, jeopardising its future expansion and Ghana’s sports aspirations. The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, raised this concern during an inspection visit to the site on Monday. He described the encroachment as a significant setback that could undermine the country’s investments in sports infrastructure.
Commissioned just last year in preparation for the 13th African Games, the Borteyman Sports Complex occupies approximately 100 acres of land in a suburb of Accra. Currently, development has only covered about 43 acres, leaving more than half of the site’s potential at risk. During his visit to the undeveloped area, Minister Adams delivered a strong message to those illegally occupying the land: “The development of the Borteyman Sports Complex is crucial for Ghana’s sports infrastructure.”
All encroachers must desist immediately. We will take all necessary steps to reclaim and protect this land.” He said The complex has already proven its worth, hosting multiple disciplines during the African Games and showcasing Ghana’s readiness to stage major international competitions. If fully developed, the facility could become a training ground for local athletes, create jobs, and draw sporting events that boost the economy.
Residents nearby have voiced mixed feelings, some expressing concern that government protection might come too late. For the Sports Ministry, however, the mission is clear: safeguard the remaining land and ensure the complex can grow to meet Ghana’s sporting aspirations. Authorities have pledged to work with local leaders and security agencies to prevent further encroachment and hold violators accountable.
