On April 22, 2025, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, a Justice of the Supreme Court, was appointed Acting Chief Justice following the suspension of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. On September 23, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama announced that he had forwarded Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s name to the Council of State for consideration as the substantive Chief Justice. If approved by Parliament, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie will succeed Justice Gertrude Sackey Esaaba Torkornoo, who was removed from her position by President Mahama based on a recommendation from a committee that found her guilty of misconduct.
Who is Paul Baffoe-Bonnie
Just Baffoe-Bonnie was born on December 26, 1956. He received his primary education at the Goaso Local Authority primary and middle schools, completing his Middle School Leaving Certificate examinations in the late 1960s. He then attended Konongo Odumase Secondary School (KOSS), where he obtained his General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level and Advanced Level certificates between 1969 and 1976. Afterwards, he enrolled at the University of Ghana and later attended the Ghana Law School, from which he was called to the Bar in 1983.
Baffoe-Bonnie began his career as a Circuit Court Judge in Kumasi and later served as a High Court Judge in Duayaw Nkwanta. In 2006, he was appointed as an Appeals Court judge and, in June 2008, he was appointed a Supreme Court Judge by President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Baffoe-Bonnie’s parents are Opanyin Baffoe-Bonnie from Sewua in the Bosomtwe District of Ashanti and Ama Kyerewaa from Breman in Kumasi. He is married to Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, who is the current Director-General of the Ghana Prison Service.
