Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has reaffirmed the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) steadfast position on the Anti-Gay Bill, asserting that the party’s stance has remained consistent since the elections. His comments were in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s recent suggestion that a government-sponsored bill might be more effective than the current Private Member’s Bill. President Mahama contended that such a move would facilitate broader consultations and foster a stronger national consensus on the issue.
During a meeting with the Bishops on Tuesday, January 14, President Mahama emphasized the need to revise the school curriculum to include moral and cultural education. This revision aims to promote Ghanaian and African values among young learners. Additionally, in an interview with Channel One TV on Monday, January 27, Mahama Ayariga clarified that any legislative proposals or agreements that are not finalized within a particular Parliament’s term are generally considered to have lapsed, along with the administration of the president under whom they were introduced.
He reiterated the NDC’s steadfast support for the Anti-Gay Bill, dismissing any suggestion of a shift in the party’s position. “No, there has been no change in our stance. The question now is whether we can simply sign and pass it into law. Would it be recognised as proper legislation, or might the process be challenged on the grounds that its validity expired with the previous Parliament?”
