President John Mahama has announced that the government will refund academic fees for all first-year tertiary students enrolling in September 2025. This initiative is part of his administration’s commitment to providing equitable access to education and was revealed during a major event on his nationwide “Thank You Tour” in Koforidua, Eastern Region.
While addressing thousands of enthusiastic supporters at Jackson Park on Sunday, July 20th, President Mahama stated that the necessary funds had already been secured to alleviate the financial burden on students and their families. “In September, the new batch of first-year students will be enrolled, and the money is ready to be reimbursed for their academic fees,” he declared, prompting loud cheers from the crowd.
The fee reimbursement is part of the government’s flagship ‘No Fees Stress’ policy, which aims to eliminate financial barriers to tertiary education, particularly for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This policy is a key component of President Mahama’s broader agenda for social protection and human capital development, which played a central role in his 2024 election campaign.
In addition to the fee support, the President revealed that his government had cleared six months of unpaid allowances owed to students in nursing and teacher training colleges. “We have also paid six months’ arrears of allowances for students at the nursing and teacher training colleges,” he stated, adding, “We promise that they will receive their allowances every month.”
