The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly has demolished all structures and shops that were recently rebuilt in the Madina Redco slum. This action followed the Assembly’s earlier declaration of the area as a security zone, citing recurring fire outbreaks, the most recent of which occurred on August 3, 2025. Authorities had warned that any encroachers who ignored this directive would face arrest and prosecution.
During the operation, three individuals were arrested for resisting law enforcement officers. Some affected traders expressed their frustration on Friday, September 12, accusing the Assembly of unfairness. One trader told Citi News, “We arrived at dawn only to find that the military and police had taken control of the area and were demolishing our structures. We even pleaded with them to let us retrieve our stock, but they refused. I have lost millions of cedis.”
Another victim, Emmanuel Kumi, lamented, “This is so unfair. We also voted for the government. Not everyone here is involved in the sale of contraband goods.” However, some residents welcomed the Assembly’s actions, describing the slum as a hub for unauthorised activities.
“They failed to adhere to the order by the Assembly not to rebuild. The business here was not good; it was making the youth go astray. I’m really happy if it’s used for proper business rather than what it was previously used for,” one resident said.
