The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has announced that two generation units have been restored following disruptions caused by a recent fire at GRIDCO’s Akosombo Substation. This announcement comes amidst concerns over erratic power supply due to the fire, which severely damaged the substation’s control room and impacted electricity transmission and evacuation capacity.

According to the Minister, this development represents progress toward stabilising power evacuation and supply to the national grid, as repairs continue on the remaining units. During the Government Accountability Series held on Monday, April 27, the Minister explained that emergency technical interventions have facilitated the gradual restoration of the affected units. He stated, “Through emergency technical interventions, the first-generation unit was successfully restored yesterday.

This afternoon, I received confirmation that the second unit has also been brought online and is generating power. The third unit is currently undergoing repairs and will be restored as soon as possible.” He added that engineers are working to restore full operational capacity, with additional units expected to be fixed in the coming days to improve overall system stability.
