Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to withdraw letters issued on post-retirement contracts for senior academic staff in public universities. The directive covers letters dated September 30 and October 1, 2025. The decision follows discussions between the Minister and leaders of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), who expressed concerns about the manner in which the policy was communicated.
A statement released on Monday, April 27, and signed by the Minister’s Press Secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, explained that the withdrawal is intended to allow further engagement with stakeholders before a final decision is taken. “The decision has been taken pending further consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure that any policy direction in this regard reflects broad consensus, promotes institutional sustainability, and serves the best interests of Ghana’s tertiary education sector,” the statement noted.
The Ministry explained that the move is intended to ensure that policies affecting tertiary education are properly reviewed and agreed upon through consultation before implementation. It added that the government remains committed to a participatory approach in managing issues within the higher education sector.
“The Ministry of Education remains committed to a transparent, inclusive, and consultative approach in addressing matters affecting the higher education landscape,” the statement added.
