Gov’t to launch WhatsApp system for reporting power outages – Jinapor

The government is set to digitise how Ghanaians report power outages, with plans to roll out a WhatsApp-based platform that enables users to instantly flag faults and prompt swift action from technical teams. According to the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, the initiative is designed to eliminate delays linked to traditional call centres and enhance communication between power providers and consumers.

Speaking on the final day of the President’s Resetting Tour in the Northern Region, Dr Jinapor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the electricity subsector, renewable energy, and petroleum. He emphasised improved communication as a priority, announcing that the new system will allow consumers to bypass call lines entirely.

“We are going to launch a system where, at the slightest outage, you won’t need to call. Just send a WhatsApp message with your location, and our teams will be dispatched immediately to resolve the issue in real time,” he said.

The move signals a shift toward real-time service delivery, with authorities expecting the platform to reduce downtime and significantly improve customer experience in electricity distribution. The rollout is also expected to deepen digital engagement in the power sector, as the government leverages mobile technology to bridge longstanding gaps in fault reporting and response time.
