The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has announced that approximately 200 transformers have been installed nationwide as part of a larger initiative to upgrade and replace around 2,500 ageing units. Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, April 27, the Minister emphasised that this effort aims to enhance voltage stability and provide a more reliable power supply.
He explained that the newly installed transformers have a higher capacity, transitioning from the commonly used 20 KVA units to more robust systems of 30 KVA and above, in order to meet the increasing demand for electricity. “The government is tackling this issue directly by implementing a nationwide transformer upgrade and replacement program. As an immediate measure, we have installed nearly 200 transformers this month alone,” he stated.
He added that deployment of the high-capacity transformers is being prioritised at key primary supply stations to enhance voltage levels in critical areas. He cited Adenta, Lashibi, and Teshie-Nungua among locations that have already benefited from the installations, noting that the upgrades in these areas can be independently verified.
The ongoing exercise is expected to ease pressure on overstretched infrastructure and improve the overall stability of power distribution nationwide.
