GMA calls for the abolition of certificate and diploma courses

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has called for the cancellation of certificate and diploma nursing programs, urging that all nursing education be elevated to the degree level. Prof. Ernest Yorke, Vice President of the GMA, made this announcement on Joy News’ PM Express, describing the current system as “bizarre” and emphasizing the need for a more qualified nursing workforce.

According to Prof. Yorke, the current dominance of auxiliary nurses (60% of the workforce) must be addressed by enhancing their qualifications. He stressed that preparing all nurses at the baccalaureate level will significantly improve maternal health indicators.

The GMA’s proposal aims to create a more competent healthcare system, with current certificate and diploma holders able to upgrade their skills to the degree level through available courses.
