Ghana’s proposed national airline is expected to begin operations within the next 12 months, according to Minister of Transport, Mr. Joseph Bukari Nikpe. He expressed confidence that the remaining documentation and regulatory approvals would be finalised in time to launch the carrier. Speaking to the media during the maiden Air Tanzania flight at Kotoka International Airport on January 28, Mr. Nikpe acknowledged that earlier efforts to revive a national airline had failed, but emphasised the current administration’s determination to succeed.
“Since the liquidation of Ghana Airways, several attempts have been made to re-establish a national carrier, but none have materialised,” he noted. “However, I firmly believe that under President Mahama, we have set up a task force, and the task force is working. Within the next 12 months, we will be celebrating a Ghanaian airline flying to the rest of the world,” he said.
Mr Nikpe did not disclose further details on the ownership structure or fleet acquisition but assured that the process was progressing steadily.
