Ghana navy seizes 8 boats suspected of illegal fuel bunkering

The Ghana Navy has seized eight unregistered boats suspected of engaging in illegal fuel bunkering at the New Takoradi and Poasi landing beaches on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. The operation followed intelligence reports indicating that unregistered vessels were being used to facilitate unlawful transfers of fuel and petroleum products.

Dr. Charles Teye, Director of the Western Regional Fisheries Commission, explained that the boats were not fishing vessels, as they were not registered with the Commission. He added that the seizure was carried out under Sections 53 and 54 of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2023, which mandate permits for vessel construction and operation.

Mr. Hudeen Daud Ahmed, Acting Branch Head of the Ghana Maritime Authority in Takoradi, commended the Navy for the successful operation. He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s maritime economy and protecting livelihoods by working closely with partner agencies to secure the nation’s maritime resources.

Representatives from Maritime institutions, including the Ghana Maritime Authority, the Fisheries Commission, the National Petroleum Authority and the Marine Police Unit of the Ghana Police Service, inspected the boats to ensure transparency. The boats have been towed to the Sekondi Naval Harbour for further investigation and action. The operation was conducted by the Western Naval Command, Sekondi, with support from the 2nd Infantry Battalion.
