EPA to launch pilot cleanup of Birim River

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) will begin a pilot project to clean the Birim River at Adiukrom in the Asiakwa Area on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, starting at 8:00 a.m. The project is part of national efforts to tackle pollution in rivers caused by illegal mining. It will show practical, science-based ways to restore damaged waterways and improve long-term water management.

Several organisations are joining the initiative, including the Ghana Water Company Limited, the Water Resources Commission, the Water Research Institute of CSIR, the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, the Ghana Standards Authority, SciencePlus, and Eillish Solutions.

Illegal mining has harmed water quality, aquatic life, and access to safe drinking water. Through this pilot exercise, the EPA aims to protect Ghana’s rivers and demonstrate how coordinated actions can restore them.
