EC publishes ballot statistics to guide printing of ballot papers

The Electoral Commission has released the ballot statistics to assist in the printing of the Presidential and Parliamentary Election Ballots for the upcoming 2024 General Election. The Commission stated that in determining the ballot statistics, it took into account the total number of voters on the 2024 Provisional Voters Register (PVR) along with a two percent increase.

While the Commission welcomes and encourages a total voter turnout on Election Day, it also recognizes that not every registered voter will vote in the 2024 General Election. The EC in a statement issued on Monday, October 14 said that it is “confident that the methodology relied upon, that is utilizing the total number of voters on the PVR plus a two percent increase to guide the printing of ballots, is adequate and will not result in shortfalls or unnecessary wastage.

This methodology of adding a percentage increase has been used by the Commission to guide the printing of ballots since 1992. We entreat the Public to trust us to deliver on our mandate.” Earlier, the commission assured that they provide ballot statistics to the Candidates / Political Parties and all Printing Houses before the printing of ballot papers starts.

The commission noted that this had been the practice over the years and hence will not deviate from it. The commission said it had taken note of some statements in the public domain to the effect that the Commission has not provided ballot statistics ahead of the printing of ballot papers for the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.

“We would like to assure the General Public that printing of ballot papers has not commenced. Printing of Notices of Polls for the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections, however, begins on Friday, 11th October 2024,” a statement issued by the commission said. “As has always been the case, the Commission will provide ballot statistics to the Candidates / Political Parties and all Printing Houses before the printing of ballot papers starts.

“Printing of ballot papers will only commence after ballot statistics has been provided to all Stakeholders. The Commission will not depart from this practice. We urge the Public and all Stakeholders to trust the Electoral Commission to deliver a transparent, credible, free and fair election in December 2024,” it said.
