Lawyers for embattled NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Bosiako, popularly known as Wontumi, have filed an application for him to be admitted to bail pending appeal. In a Notice of Motion filed on 6 August at the High Court, Criminal Division 4 in Accra, counsel for Wontumi and his company are asking the court to release him from the Nsawam Medium Security Prison while their appeal is heard. The motion, signed by Samuel Atta Akyea of Zoe, Akyea & Co., is brought pursuant to Section 96(1) of Act 30 and Section 33(1) of Act 459.

Counsel is praying the court for “an order that the Applicant, who is currently incarcerated at the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons, be admitted to bail pending appeal upon the grounds stated in the accompanying affidavit.” The court is expected to hear the application on Wednesday, 19 August at 9:00 a.m.

Wontumi is the 1st Appellant/Applicant. *Akonta Mining Company Limited is listed as the 3rd Appellant. Kwame Antwi is listed as the 2nd Accused Person and is “at large.” Copies of the motion have been served on the Office of the Attorney-General and the Director of Prisons, Nsawam Medium Security Prisons.

The filing comes as Wontumi remains in custody at Nsawam following his conviction. Details of the grounds for the bail application were contained in an accompanying affidavit not immediately available.
