Former Dome Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo has openly declared her support for former Vice-President Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, emphasising that her political future in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is closely linked to his leadership as the party approaches a significant transition. Addressing party delegates, she urged the NPP to carefully consider its path and internal affairs, encouraging members to make strategic, rather than emotional, decisions.
“It is time for Bawumia,” she stated. Adwoa Safo also recognised that ambition is an inherent aspect of politics and argued that no one should be faulted for aspiring to lead. “I am a politician, and Honourable Kennedy Agyapong is also a politician. Just as Honourable Ken has his own views and ambitions, I also have mine and am advancing my political journey.”
She stated that while the NPP is a broad political family with deep grassroots connections, leadership decisions must rise above personal relationships. “Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion in politics,” she said, stressing that choices must be guided by the party’s long-term interests.
Addressing speculation about her motives, Adwoa Safo rejected claims that her support for Dr. Bawumia is driven by hostility towards Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong. “I do not hate Honourable Kennedy Agyapong,” she said. “We have two beautiful children together, one male and one female; therefore, I do not hate Honourable Kennedy Agyapong.”
However, she was emphatic that personal relationships should not influence party leadership. “This is not a matter of family and friends in the NPP party.” Reflecting on the party’s recent electoral defeat, she urged members to confront uncomfortable truths. “We must learn lessons from our loss, which has rendered us in opposition.”
She pointed to perceptions of favouritism during the party’s time in government as a major setback. “While in government, we made that mistake, and it has cost us.”
Adwoa Safo also questioned whether her years of service were being overlooked. “I started contesting as a Member of Parliament in 2007, and I have been a member of the party from that period up until now.”
“I have served as a Member of Parliament for twelve years; I have been a Deputy Majority Leader, a Minister for Procurement, and a Minister for Gender. The question is, have I not served?”
While acknowledging Agyapong’s contributions, she voiced concerns about her own prospects if he were to lead the party and ultimately become president. “I have never said he will win this contest,” she stated. “But let’s assume he does win and becomes president, and he comes across my CV. Considering the work I’ve done and my service to both the nation and the party, it would be unthinkable for someone with whom I have two children to appoint me as a minister. The Kennedy Agyapong I know, with whom I share two children, would never do that.”
She added, “And the Kennedy Agyapong I know, with whom I have two children, would never do it. Therefore, my political career and future are at stake. My future is Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia.”
