Accra’s skyline ‘a mess’ – AAG backs crackdown on illegal billboards

The Advertising Association of Ghana (AAG) has endorsed the government’s clampdown on the uncontrolled spread of billboards across Accra, describing the initiative as long overdue. Speaking during an inspection tour by the Technical Committee on the Regularisation and Sanitisation of Billboards and Signages, led by Deputy Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, AAG Executive Director Isaac Cudjoe noted that the capital’s skyline has become disorderly and requires stricter enforcement to restore order.

The team visited sections of the Ayawaso West, Ayawaso East, and La Dade-Kotopon municipalities to assess the scale of unregulated billboards. Mr. Cudjoe explained that while members of the Association generally comply with industry rules, many operators remain unregistered and operate outside established self-regulation. He stressed that the Association supports the removal of illegally mounted billboards to sanitise the environment and strengthen oversight of the sector.

Expressing optimism, he added that with sustained political will and closer collaboration between government and industry stakeholders, Accra’s skyline could see significant improvement by next year. “It is long overdue actually. We have been looking for that kind of will, for any government to be able to take the bull by the horn in order to sanitise the environment. It is a mess,” he said.
