Ablekuma North election violence: 8 fined GH¢48,000 for assaulting Hawa Koomson, 2 others

The eight persons who were convicted for assaulting a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, and two others during the Ablekuma North parliamentary election re-run at the Methodist Church Polling Station on July 11, 2025, have been fined GH¢48,000. Each of them is to pay GH¢6,000. In default they will spend 24 months behind bars.

The eight, who were also convicted for assaulting a Deputy Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei and a trader from Alajo, Majeed Mohammed Saana, had pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to assault, and three counts of assault when they appeared before the Accra Circuit Court last Monday.

The convicts are Jijani Mahmudu, a driver from Mamobi; Prince Dzakpasu, a businessman from Newtown; Anas Mohammed, an estate developer from Lapaz; Mohammed Hamda, a mechanic from Alajo, and Darko Otibu Samuel, a businessman from Amasaman. The rest are Musah Muntari, a Station Manager from Mallam Atta; Ali Saeed, a businessman from Fadama and Al Mohammed Abubakar, a private security man from Alajo. The court, presided over by Isaac Addo, convicted the eight on their own pleas

Facts

Narrating the facts of the case, Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer said on June 11, 2025, the complainants, who are members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), went to the Ablekuma North polling station for the re-run of the parliamentary election. He said in the course of visiting the polling centres, on reaching the Methodist Church Polling Station, Hawa Koomson and Sanaa were attacked and assaulted by the accused persons.

After they were rescued by the security men at the polling station, the accused persons proceeded to assault Kwei, who was also at the polling centre without any provocation. The prosecutor said all the complainants were rescued and taken to the Odorkor Police Station and the Regional/CID/AR, where they formally lodged complaints of assault.

“Police medical forms were issued to them, after which they proceeded to the hospital for treatment. The accused persons were subsequently arrested. They all denied the allegations in their caution statements. “After investigations, they were charged with the offences and arraigned before this honourable court,” the prosecutor told the court.
