GMet issues fresh rain warning as Accra battles flooding

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has forecast more rainfall across Accra and its surrounding areas from Monday evening into Tuesday, raising concerns over further flooding. The forecast comes after hours of heavy rainfall triggered widespread flooding in several parts of the capital, inundating roads, displacing residents, and disrupting transport and other activities.

Deputy Director-General (Operations) of GMet, Dr Ignatius Kweku Williams in an interview on the Channel One TV said there is a high probability of continued rainfall in the coming hours, with another likely spell of rain expected early Tuesday morning. He urged the public to remain alert and regularly check official updates from the agency as weather conditions remain unstable.

“I will use this opportunity to engage people: please, even if you are on the go, check our social media handles. X is the Ghana Meteorological Agency, and you will find this information,” he said. The warning comes as Accra grapples with recovery from severe flooding caused by hours of relentless rainfall from Sunday night into Monday morning.

Hard‑hit areas included Kaneshie, Adabraka, Circle, Weija, Adentan, East Legon, Achimota, Spintex, and sections around the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, where major roads were submerged and traffic ground to a halt. Motorists struggled through deep floodwaters or abandoned routes altogether, leaving commuters stranded across the city.

In low‑lying neighbourhoods, residents awoke to rising waters invading homes and shops, sparking frantic efforts to salvage belongings. Emergency services have yet to provide a full damage assessment or confirm casualties, as monitoring continues.

Authorities have urged motorists to avoid flooded roads and advised residents in flood‑prone areas to remain vigilant as the rainy season intensifies. Recurring floods in Accra are often linked to inadequate drainage, rapid urban expansion, and blocked waterways from poor waste disposal—factors that continue to magnify the impact of seasonal rains.
