President John Dramani Mahama has stated that the government cannot finance large-scale travel for Ghanaian supporters to the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to prohibitive costs. He explained that transporting fans from Ghana to host venues, along with accommodation, feeding, and match tickets, would amount to about $11,000 per person—a figure he described as unsustainable for public funding.
Speaking at a diaspora town hall meeting on Sunday, May 31, Mahama reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline, stressing that such expenditure would be an imprudent use of state resources. Instead, he announced that the government will provide match tickets for Ghanaians in the diaspora who wish to attend games in the host cities.
