The final funeral rites for celebrated gospel musician Yaw Sarpong will be held on Saturday, May 9, at the Asuofua Town Park in Kumasi. The ceremonies begin with a wake-keeping on Friday, May 8, followed by a lying-in-state on Saturday morning at the same venue.
Mourners are requested to wear red and black for Saturday’s burial service, and white and black for the Thanksgiving service on Sunday.
Yaw Sarpong, founder and leader of the Asomafo Band, leaves behind a remarkable legacy in Ghana’s gospel music scene spanning nearly five decades. Renowned for timeless classics such as Wo Haw Ne Sen, Awurade Kasa, and Tie Obiaa, his spiritually uplifting music and distinctive style inspired generations across denominations. His contributions helped elevate gospel music nationally, earning him the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
