The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued an apology to customers affected by recent power disruptions following the fire outbreak at the Akosombo GRIDCo substation, assuring that engineers are working to restore full supply. Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, April 26, ECG’s General Manager for External Relations, Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, explained that the incident cut off about 1,000 megawatts of power but emphasised that electricity supply has remained relatively stable in several parts of the country.
“After Akosombo, the fact is that it blocked about 1,000 megawatts, but even with that loss, we have maintained a consistent supply in some areas,” he noted. Dr. Ayiku added that restoration efforts are ongoing across the transmission network, with some regions already back on full supply while work continues to reconnect other lines. He further cautioned against calls for a load-shedding timetable, describing such demands as premature, given the progress being made.

He noted that engineers have assured ECG of full restoration soon and urged the public to remain calm.
“The engineers have assured us that the supply will be restored very soon. I encourage our customers and the general public to stay calm and be assured that the situation is under control,” he said. Dr. Ayiku offered an apology to affected customers, acknowledging the severity and unexpected nature of the incident. “I sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused. This was a major and unforeseen incident that disabled an entire control room, and we deeply regret the impact on our cherished customers,” he stated.
He added that ECG, GRIDCo, and the Volta River Authority (VRA) are working jointly to restore full electricity supply nationwide. Meanwhile, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has directed the Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCo to step aside pending investigations into the fire outbreak at the Akosombo Power Control Centre.
