Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged the Ghana Armed Forces to reassess its recruitment approach in the wake of the tragic stampede at El-Wak Sports Stadium on November 12, 2025. The incident, which claimed six lives as thousands of young applicants gathered for a military enlistment exercise, has raised serious concerns nationwide about crowd control and recruitment protocols.
Addressing the issue during a campaign stop in Ho, Volta Region, on Thursday, November 13, Dr. Bawumia emphasised the urgency of reform. “This unfortunate event underscores the need for the military to revisit its recruitment strategy,” he said. “We must explore improved techniques and leverage technology to prevent such tragedies in the future. May the souls of those we lost rest in perfect peace.”
Dr. Bawumia’s comments add to growing calls for a comprehensive overhaul of recruitment processes to prevent future tragedies and ensure the safety of applicants.
