Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has revealed that starting in 2026, the government will initiate procurement procedures for the acquisition of four advanced helicopters, one long-range aircraft, and one medium-range aircraft to boost the operational capacity of the Ghana Air Force. Delivering the 2026 Budget Statement on Thursday, November 13, Dr. Forson noted that the aircraft are expected to be delivered within four years following the completion of procurement processes.
He underscored that this initiative reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to modernising the nation’s security apparatus and reinforcing its defence infrastructure. Dr. Forson highlighted the strategic importance of the Ghana Air Force, describing it as a cornerstone of national defence. Its roles include aerial surveillance, transportation of troops and logistics, air defence, maritime patrol, disaster relief, and medical evacuation services.
Ato Forson highlighted operational challenges facing the institution due to an ageing fleet and high maintenance demands, which affect readiness and efficiency. The planned acquisitions, he said, will help address these challenges and enhance the Force’s ability to respond swiftly to both security and humanitarian needs.
“The Ghana Air Force will be retooled. Beginning in 2026, the Government of Ghana will start procurement processes for the acquisition of four modern helicopters, one long-range, and one medium-range aircraft,” he stated. “Mr. Speaker, on 13th August, 2020, the Government of Ghana entered into a supplier’s credit agreement of US$80 million with Messrs. ELBIT Systems Land Ltd for the procurement of nineteen (19) Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and related defence systems,” he added.
