Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State for Government Communications, expressed gratitude for the contributions of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, highlighting his ongoing value and expertise. President John Dramani Mahama removed Dr. Dampare from his position as part of the ongoing discussions about security sector reforms under his administration.
He appointed COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) and officially swore him in on Friday, March 14. Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who was appointed IGP in 2021, is well-known for leading important policing reforms, including community engagement initiatives and measures to improve internal discipline within the police service. Speaking on The KeyPoints on March 15, Kwakye Ofosu commented, “We can only wish Dampare well and thank him for his service. With his experience, he remains a valuable asset and should be in high demand in other areas where his expertise is needed. This is simply a routine leadership change.”
The Minister further highlighted the President’s authority in such matters, stating that the President had the authority to thank an appointee for their service and appoint someone else. “A new leader often makes changes to align key institutions, like the security services, with their vision for the country. This is not personal; it is simply part of governance,” he added.
