Some activists are planning a demonstration from October 3 to 5th in Accra. The march is expected to start from Legon Okponglo to the Black Star Square in Accra. The protest is aimed at pushing for the release of 53 anti-galamsey protesters who were arrested by police and detained a week ago. The event, organized under the slogans “FreeTheCitizens” and “SayNoToGalamsey,” also seeks to denounce illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, which has been a long-standing environmental and social issue in Ghana.
Earlier this week, the police approved the designated routes for the march, namely; Legon Stadium – Okponglo Traffic Light – Shiashie/Standard Board Traffic Light – Shangri La – Airport Traffic Light – Association International School – National Service Secretariat – Castle Kawukudi – Kanda Highway – Accra High School Junction – Electoral Commission Office – Ridge – Ridge Hospital – AU Roundabout – Parliament – Osu Cemetery – Accra Sports Stadium – Independence Square.
Mobilisation efforts have been strong on social media, with thousands of participants expected to join the demonstration. The protest is anticipated to draw attention to both the plight of the arrested activists and the ongoing fight against illegal mining activities across the country.
