Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has stated that Ghana’s embassies are ready to assist Ghanaians living abroad. He has urged them to reach out to their embassies for support. His remarks come in response to President Donald Trump’s decision to prioritize the deportation of undocumented foreign nationals. Reports indicate that the U.S. has identified approximately 18,000 Indian nationals believed to have entered the country illegally.
Mr. Ablakwa emphasized the importance of Ghanaians building closer relationships with their embassies, explaining that assistance can only be provided when the embassies are familiar with them. He revealed that currently, there are 156 Ghanaians at risk of imminent deportation from the United States. This figure, he noted, is the official number they are working with at the moment. Speaking on TV3’s Key Points on Saturday, February 8, he stated, “There are 156 individuals facing imminent deportation from the US.”
He further revealed that the deportation exercise by the US government “raises the bigger issue of how we protect the welfare of Ghanaians.” To that end, he said, “we are going to see new paradigms in terms of consular assistance.” He further urged Ghanaians living abroad “to get closer to the embassies, get registered and then we can really take care of them.”
