The UK and its neighbouring countries are set to witness a rare solar eclipse today, August 12, 2026. This phenomenon hasn’t been seen on such a scale in nearly three decades, and excitement among citizens across Europe is palpable. Reports indicate that more than 90% of the Sun will be obscured by the Moon in most parts of the UK, while regions of Iceland and Spain will experience a rare total solar eclipse. This will be the first total solar eclipse visible from continental Europe since 1999 and the most dramatic eclipse observed from the UK in the same timeframe.
As anticipation builds, many people are rushing to obtain special eclipse glasses, leading to dwindling supplies. Experts caution that ordinary sunglasses do not provide adequate protection and advise using only approved eclipse glasses to safeguard one’s eyesight. The eclipse will begin its path in Siberia, Russia, before moving to Alaska in the United States around 07:30 local time (16:30 BST).
It will then continue across Greenland and into Europe. The public is therefore encouraged to take the necessary safety precautions and use proper eclipse glasses or viewers, as looking directly at the Sun without adequate protection could risk serious and permanent eye damage.
