Two suspected armed robbers were shot dead during a confrontation with police after a daylight attack on a mobile money vendor at Tema Community 5 in the Greater Accra Region. The incident occurred on Monday, April 13, 2026, at about 8:30 a.m., when the suspects allegedly targeted a vendor at Aba Fosuah Plaza under the guise of conducting a cash-out transaction.
According to a statement from the Tema Regional Police Command, signed by Head of Public Affairs ASP Dede Dzakpasu, one of the suspects—riding as a pillion passenger on a motorbike—approached the vendor and requested a transaction. As the vendor reached into her bag to retrieve her phone, the suspect reportedly drew a pistol and demanded the bag containing cash.
Police said the victim resisted, leading to a struggle involving both the pillion rider and the motorbike rider. During the confrontation, the pillion passenger shot the vendor in the leg, forcing her to surrender the bag before the suspects fled the scene. The statement indicated that a police patrol team from the Tema Regional Operations Unit, which had been deployed nearby for routine security duties, responded swiftly to a distress call and pursued the fleeing suspects.
The Ghana Police Service has reported that two suspects riding a black Royal motorbike with registration number M-24-GE 778 allegedly opened fire on officers near Smart Hotel Junction at Community 6. Police returned fire, leaving both suspects with gunshot wounds that caused them to fall from the motorbike. They were rushed to the Police Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies have since been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation, identification, and autopsy.
A search of the suspects uncovered a 9mm pistol loaded with ammunition, three mobile phones, assorted SIM cards, a talisman, a Ghana Card, a motorbike key, and cash totaling GH¢11,390. Police also retrieved a spent cartridge from the robbery scene. The Ghana Card was later confirmed to belong to the robbery victim.
Meanwhile, the injured vendor is receiving medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition. The Tema Regional Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to maintaining safety and security, urging residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
