U.S. President Donald J. Trump has announced a two-week suspension of planned military action against Iran, indicating a potential breakthrough in efforts to secure a long-term peace agreement in the region. In a statement, President Trump explained that the decision was made following discussions with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and military leader Asim Munir, who both urged restraint.
The ceasefire is contingent on Iran agreeing to the “complete, immediate, and safe opening” of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route. “I agree to suspend the bombing and attacks on Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a mutual ceasefire,” he stated. President Trump emphasised that this move comes after the United States has already achieved its key military objectives and highlighted that negotiations toward a broader peace agreement are at an advanced stage.
“We have already met and exceeded all military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive agreement concerning long-term peace with Iran, and peace in the Middle East,” he said. He further disclosed that the U.S. has received a 10-point proposal from Iran, which he described as a “workable basis” for negotiations.
“Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to… but a two-week period will allow the agreement to be finalised and consummated,” he noted. The announcement raises prospects of de-escalation in tensions between the two countries, with the potential to stabilise the broader Middle East region if a final agreement is reached.
President Trump described the development as a significant step toward resolving a long-standing conflict. “On behalf of the United States… it is an honor to have this long-term problem close to resolution,” he said.
