The concept of the National Cathedral was a good one, but its execution fell short – Mahama Ayariga

Mahama Ayariga, the Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, has described the National Cathedral project initiated by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a good idea that was poorly executed. Ayariga shared this assessment during his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, as part of the vetting process for his potential approval as Minister.

The Bawku Central Member of Parliament expressed no fundamental objections to establishing a National Cathedral for Christians in Ghana, emphasising that religious worship is significant in the lives of many Ghanaians. However, he voiced concerns regarding certain aspects of the project, particularly the chosen location for the cathedral.

“I believe that Ghanaians are deeply religious, even though we are constitutionally regarded as a secular state. Having cathedrals, church buildings, mosques, and other places of worship is vital and valuable, enabling the practice of various religions,” Ayariga stated. “In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with having a National Cathedral for the Christians of the country. Concerning the National Cathedral initiated by Nana Akufo-Addo during his presidency, I don’t have a problem with the concept. I think it was a good idea that was poorly executed, and I personally had issues with the location.”
