Stephen Amoah, Bryan Acheampong back repeal of E-Levy

Some key members of the Minority have thrown their support behind the decision to repeal the controversial Electronic Transactions Levy (E-Levy). Former Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Stephen Amoah expressed his stance on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, following the presentation of a report by Finance Committee Chairman, Isaac Adongo, which recommended the repeal of the tax.

The E-Levy Repeal Bill is currently at the consideration stage, marking a crucial step toward its removal from Ghana’s tax system. Some lawmakers and economic analysts arguing that its removal will ease financial burdens on Ghanaians, while others warn of potential revenue losses for the government.

Dr Amoah’s decision was followed by that of NPP MP and former Food and Agriculture Minister, Bryan Acheampong. The E-Levy, which was introduced in 2022, imposed a tax on mobile money and electronic transactions, a move that was widely unpopular among citizens and businesses.

Parliament is expected to deliberate further before making a final decision on the fate of the levy. The move forms part of President John Mahama’s promises in his early days at the helm of the country’s affairs.
