Price hikes for sachet water suspended following intervention from the government.

The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has announced the suspension of the planned increase in sachet water prices, which was set to take effect today, Monday, April 6, 2026, following government intervention. In a statement shared on its official Facebook page, the Ministry praised the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) and the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP) for their cooperation in halting the adjustment.

“This decision underscores our commitment to safeguarding consumers and maintaining market stability,” the statement read. The government assured the public that sachet water prices will remain unchanged, allowing consumers to continue purchasing at current rates. To address the broader challenges confronting the sector, the Ministry has scheduled an emergency meeting with the leadership of both associations on Wednesday, April 8.

The Ministry did not specify the exact reasons behind the proposed price hike, though sachet water producers have recently pointed to rising costs of raw materials such as plastic resins, fuel, and water treatment chemicals, alongside exchange rate pressures. In its statement, the Ministry reiterated its commitment to collaborating with trade associations across all sectors to swiftly resolve disputes and safeguard market stability.

“The Ministry remains resolute in working with all trade associations to address challenges promptly and preserve stability in the market,” the release emphasised. Sachet water continues to serve as an essential daily commodity for millions of Ghanaians, particularly in urban and peri-urban communities where piped water supply is unreliable. Any prolonged increase in price would have immediate consequences for household budgets and public health. Additional updates are expected after Wednesday’s emergency meeting.
