The Kumasi High Court has sentenced Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, known as “Taacum,” to life imprisonment after a seven-member jury found him guilty of murder by a 5–2 majority verdict. Inspector Twumasi was convicted for fatally shooting his girlfriend, Victoria Dapaah—widely known as Maadwoa—near her home in Adum, Kumasi, on April 20, 2023.
The incident sparked nationwide outrage and intensified concerns about gun violence and misconduct within the security services. Although Twumasi initially admitted to the shooting, he later claimed it was unintentional and pleaded not guilty, prompting a full trial. After nearly three years of legal proceedings, Justice Rosemond Baah-Tosu delivered the final judgment on Friday, April 24, 2025.
The courtroom was filled with Victoria Dapaah’s family members, who expressed relief and gratitude at the verdict. Her mother, Adwoa Nyarko, thanked the media for their persistent coverage, calling the ruling “long-overdue justice” for her daughter.
Background
Twenty-six-year-old Victoria Dapaah, popularly known as Maa Adwoa, was allegedly shot and killed by her boyfriend, Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, on April 20, 2023, at Adum — just a few metres from her residence. During his first court appearance, Inspector Twumasi admitted to the shooting but claimed he did not intend to kill “his lover.”
Investigations by the prosecution revealed that the incident followed a dispute over a GH¢5,000 debt. The police officer had reportedly demanded a refund from the deceased, and when she failed to repay the amount, he allegedly shot her, resulting in her death.
